EDF EN acquires a 161 MW wind project under development in the United States
enXco, the US subsidiary of EDF Energies Nouvelles, has signed an agreement with Cielo Wind Power, a developer and operator of wind energy plants, to acquire the 161 MW Spinning Spur Wind Project under development in Texas.
The Spinning Spur project located in Oldham County west of Amarillo (Texas) is equipped with 70 Siemens turbines, each with a unit capacity of 2.3 MW.
The electricity generated will be sold to Southwestern Public Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Xcel Energy, under a 15-year power purchase agreement. Construction is due to begin in the first half of this year, with the facility scheduled for commissioning in December 2012.
This will be enXco’s first wind project in Texas. This acquisition will boost EDF Energies Nouvelles’ production capacity and its position in the United States.
“The situation in the US wind energy market and the uncertainty surrounding the renewal of the Production Tax Credit post 2012 have created opportunities for partnerships with major developers such as Cielo Wind Power. First and foremost, this represents an ideal step for us to move into the Texas market as a producer of wind electricity,” commented David Corchia, Chief Executive Officer of EDF Energies Nouvelles.
